Help safeguard Greensboro’s homes, businesses, and community spaces through fire code compliance, inspections, and public education.



The City of Greensboro is seeking a knowledgeable and service-driven Fire Protection Specialist to support fire prevention and community safety efforts through inspections, plan reviews, and code compliance activities. This role plays a critical part in protecting lives and property by ensuring new construction and existing facilities meet fire safety standards. Compensation and Benefits:

Hiring Salary Range: $58,430.00 - $76,882.00  Full Salary Range: $58,430.00 - $104,560.00 Annually

** Position eligible for Signing Bonus.**
Range up to $3,800.00

The Fire Prevention Division works proactively to reduce fire risks and improve life safety throughout Greensboro. Through inspections, code enforcement, public education, and community risk reduction initiatives, the division helps ensure businesses, residents, and visitors are protected through safe building practices and fire prevention strategies.

About the Role:

The Fire Protection Specialist conducts construction plan reviews, inspections, and compliance evaluations to ensure adherence to applicable fire and life safety codes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct new construction plan reviews and inspections for fire code compliance
  • Review building plans and construction documentation to verify adherence to applicable codes and regulations
  • Perform on-site inspections and site reviews for compliance with local, state, and national fire codes
  • Investigate and resolve field issues using sound judgment and established procedures
  • Educate the public on fire prevention and life safety practices
  • Participate in community risk reduction programs and outreach initiatives
  • Maintain accurate inspection records and documentation
  • Work collaboratively with contractors, developers, City staff, and the public to promote compliance and safety

Additional Position Details:
  • Position includes both office and field-based responsibilities
  • Requires frequent interaction with contractors, developers, and the public
  • Must be able to interpret technical plans, codes, and construction documents
  • Requires strong communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills
  • Employee is expected to exercise independent judgment when resolving field compliance issues

This job is Non-Exempt and is subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School/GED
  • 4+ years of "related" experience (i.e., fire protection system rough-ins and acceptance testing, certificate of occupancy inspections, alteration inspections, or construction permit plan review, etc.)
  • NC Fire Inspector II 
    • "OR" an equivalency of the following for consideration:
      • Four years of fire protection system design, construction, or inspection experience under a licensed engineer or registered architect.
      • DOD Fire Inspector Certification
      • Fire Inspector II Certification Standard or Probationary
      • ICC Fire Inspector Certification
      • Bachelor's Degree in Fire Protection or Construction
      • License as a professional engineer or registered architect with design, construction, or inspection experience on level III buildings
  • NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist ("OR" within 1 year of hire date)
  • Valid NC Class C driver's license 
    • ("OR" out of state with an ability to obtain NCDL-Class C)       

An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications):
  • NC Fire Inspector III
  • National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) I, II, III  
  •  NC Fire Investigation Technician
  • NC Fire Instructor I
