Fire Sprinkler Inspector

The Fire Sprinkler Inspector is responsible for performing inspection, testing, and documentation of fire sprinkler and related water-based fire protection systems to ensure systems are operating properly and comply with applicable codes, standards, manufacturer requirements, and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements. The Fire Sprinkler Inspector performs scheduled and periodic inspections, identifies deficiencies, prepares accurate inspection reports, communicates findings to customers, and works closely with local management to support the timely correction of identified deficiencies.

Essential Job Functions:
- Perform inspection and testing of commercial fire sprinkler and water-based fire protection systems in accordance with applicable codes, standards, manufacturer requirements, and company procedures.
- Conduct inspections in accordance with NFPA 25 and other applicable NFPA standards and local fire codes.
- Inspect and test wet-pipe, dry-pipe, pre-action, deluge, standpipe, fire pump, and other applicable water-based fire protection systems.
- Inspect sprinkler system control valves, alarm valves, check valves, backflow preventers, waterflow devices, supervisory devices, pressure gauges, fire department connections, and associated system components.
- Perform required testing of waterflow alarms, supervisory devices, alarm valves, dry-pipe valves, pre-action systems, and other system components.
- Conduct main drain tests, inspector's tests, alarm tests, and other required operational tests.
- Inspect fire sprinkler piping, hangers, bracing, fittings, sprinkler heads, valves, and related equipment for visible deficiencies or conditions affecting system performance.
- Inspect fire department connections for accessibility, condition, identification, caps/plugs, and other applicable requirements.
- Inspect sprinkler system control valves to verify accessibility, condition, identification, and proper position.
- Verify that required valves and system components are properly secured and supervised where applicable.
- Inspect water storage tanks, fire pumps, pump controllers, and related equipment when within the inspector's qualifications and scope of work.
- Identify system deficiencies, impairments, damaged equipment, obstructed sprinklers, inaccessible valves, inadequate clearance, corrosion, leaks, missing components, and other conditions requiring corrective action.
- Accurately document inspection results and deficiencies using company-approved inspection forms and electronic reporting systems.
- Provide customers with clear explanations of inspection findings and recommended corrective actions.
- Complete inspection reports and required documentation in a timely manner.
- Ensure inspection equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and in good working condition.
- Maintain company vehicles, tools, testing equipment, uniforms, and other assigned property.
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures, including applicable OSHA requirements.
- Maintain a professional appearance and courteous customer-service approach at all times.
- Participate in training and continuing education to maintain technical competency and applicable certifications.
- Stay current with changes to fire sprinkler technology, applicable codes, NFPA standards, manufacturer requirements, and local AHJ requirements.
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Experience & Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent required.
- Previous experience with fire sprinkler systems, fire protection, plumbing, mechanical systems, or a related field preferred.
- Ability to learn and apply applicable NFPA standards and local fire codes.
- Basic understanding of water-based fire protection systems and mechanical components.
- Ability to read system documentation, equipment labels, drawings, inspection forms, and technical information.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong customer-service skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage a daily inspection schedule.
- NICET certification in Fire Sprinkler Systems or related fire protection discipline.
- State or local fire sprinkler inspection certification or license, where required.
- Maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Must be able to successfully complete applicable background and drug screening requirements.
Physical Requirements:
- Regularly utilizes a computer or tablet, telephone, and other office/shop equipment and may participate in virtual and in-person meetings.
- Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, climbing, and working on your feet for extended periods, including up to eight hours per day.
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs and access mechanical rooms, rooftops, fire pump rooms, and other equipment areas.
- Ability to lift and carry inspection equipment and materials as required.
- Ability to work in commercial, industrial, construction, and other field environments.
- Ability to work in difficult-to-access areas when required.
- Ability to travel to customer locations and occasionally work outside normal business hours.
