Job Description

Responsible for installing, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing fire sprinkler systems in school district buildings, ensuring they function properly and according to local and national fire codes. Works and coordinates with Fire Alarm Technicians when required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Complies with the Code of Ethics of the Education Profession; upholds and enforces rules, administrative directives, regulations, GISD school board policies, as well as local, state and federal regulations. 
All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and computer security regulations.

  • Installation:
    • Read blueprints/engineer drawings and project specifications to understand system layout. 
    • Measure, cut, and thread piping to install sprinkler systems. 
    • Install sprinkler heads, valves, and other components according to fire codes. 
    • Drill penetrations through walls and floors for pipe runs. 
  • Maintenance and Inspection:
    • Conduct routine inspections and testing of fire sprinkler systems to identify potential issues. 
    • Test sprinkler heads and system pressure to ensure proper functionality. 
    • Clean and lubricate system components. 
    • Perform necessary repairs and replacements on damaged or malfunctioning components. 
    • Schedule and accompany fire inspection contractors on annual/semi-annual and quarterly inspections.
    • Accompany fire marshal during inspections of district facilities.
    • Implement and document fire watch operations when necessary
  • Troubleshooting and Repair:
    • Diagnose system malfunctions by analyzing pressure readings, flow patterns, and system behavior. 
    • Repair leaks, broken pipes, or faulty sprinkler heads 
    • Identify and address code violations 
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain detailed records of inspections, repairs, and system modifications 
    • Generate reports detailing findings and recommended actions 
    • Communicate with supervisors regarding system status 
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Understanding of plumbing principles, pipefitting techniques, and fire sprinkler system design 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Associate’s degree 
  • Valid Driver’s License
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Driver’s License
NICET Certified Fire Sprinkler Technician and current State of New Mexico Fire Sprinkler Fitter Journeyman’s license.

Supplemental Information

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

  • Ability to use multiple warehouse/tracking software and platforms.
  • Knowledge of Google Suites
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites

LANGUAGE SKILLS 
Ability to read and interpret documents in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLSAbility to add and subtract two-digit numbers.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY 
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds and up to 100 pounds occasionally.  Ability to properly use and care for job related tools and equipment. Frequent District wide travel.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly works indoors and will work outdoors.  The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment.  The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, sprays.  The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
