Position Summary

The Fire Alarm Service Technician is responsible for inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, servicing, and repairing fire alarm and life safety systems to ensure reliable operation and compliance with applicable codes and standards. This role works directly with customers in the field, documents findings and corrective actions, and coordinates with the service coordinator/management team to deliver timely, professional service.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) of fire alarm systems and related life safety devices in accordance with NFPA 72 and local AHJ requirements.
  • Troubleshoot system troubles/alarms/supervisory conditions; diagnose wiring, device, power, and programming issues; complete repairs and restore systems to normal operation.
  • Service fire alarm control panels and peripheral devices (initiating devices, notification appliances, power supplies, NACs, relays, dialers/communicators, and network components as applicable).
  • Perform system functional testing (including device tests) and support acceptance testing and re-inspections with customers and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) when needed.
  • Identify code deficiencies and system impairments; explain findings to customers clearly and professionally; recommend corrective actions and provide information needed for proposals/quotes.
  • Complete accurate, legible, and timely service documentation (service tickets, test reports, deficiency reports, materials used, and closeout notes) using company forms/software.
  • Coordinate with service coordinator/dispatch regarding scheduling, parts availability, return visits, and customer communication.
  • Maintain service vehicle, tools, and test equipment; keep inventory organized; follow company check-in/check-out and calibration processes.
  • Follow all safety requirements (PPE, ladder safety, driving safety, jobsite rules) and maintain a clean, professional work area.
  • Provide basic customer training on system operation (as appropriate) and maintain strong customer relationships.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and respond to emergency service calls as required.
  • Assist with small installs, device replacements, and system upgrades when assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical/trade schooling a plus.
  • 2+ years of experience servicing, troubleshooting, or installing fire alarm systems (commercial required).
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 72 and basic electrical principles; familiarity with NEC/NFPA 70 a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, riser diagrams, device layouts, and manufacturer documentation.
  • Proficient with computers/mobile devices for service documentation and communication.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Strong customer service, communication, and time-management skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • NICET Fire Alarm Systems (FAS) certification (Level I–III) or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe.
  • Experience with common manufacturers/panels (e.g., Gamewell-FCI, Fire-Lite, Silent Knight, Notifier, Siemens, Edwards/EST, Simplex).
  • State/local fire alarm licensure where required.
  • Experience with IP/cellular communicators, networked panels, and integration with sprinkler monitoring, elevator recall, smoke control, and other interfaces.
  • Ability to estimate materials/labor for repairs and small projects; ability to lead smaller service jobs independently.


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed at customer sites (construction environments, occupied facilities, rooftops, mechanical/electrical rooms).
  • Must be able to climb ladders, work at heights, and safely access ceilings and tight spaces.
  • Must be able to lift/carry up to 50 lbs and perform repetitive bending, kneeling, and standing.
  • Must be able to work occasional nights/weekends for emergency calls, off-hours testing, or scheduled shutdowns.

  • Service documentation is complete, accurate, and submitted on time.
  • Repairs are completed safely and correctly with minimal repeat trips.
  • Customer communication is professional; issues and recommendations are clear.
  • Company vehicle, tools, and test equipment are maintained and accounted for.
  • Work complies with applicable codes, manufacturer requirements, and company quality standards.
